Perhaps the most commonly known experience with addiction involves alcohol and/or drugs. Generally a person who cannot stop using alcohol or other drugs despite negative consequences is probably struggling with an addictive process.
Some believe we are seeing increasing social tolerance for substance use. The legalization of "recreational use" of marijuana in some states despite consistent research on the dangers of marijuana use may be influencing social perception on the use of drugs and alcohol.
Our interest here has less to do with moral and legal issues associated with drug and alcohol use than with the consequences of use and how to bring recovery and repair to self and relationships when use undermines health.
